The UTC IKEA Is a Fraction of Tampa's Size. Here's What You'll Actually Be Able to Carry Home

What does an IKEA look like when it skips the warehouse? On N. Cattlemen Road, in University Town Center's West District, that answer is close. The store at 147 N. Cattlemen Road covers 48,000 square feet. The Tampa IKEA, the closest one for Manatee County residents, is more than 350,000 square feet and two stories tall.

At roughly one-seventh the floor space, the Sarasota store isn't a closer copy of Tampa. It's built for a different kind of trip. Small items will go home with you the same day. Large furniture will be seen, planned and then ordered. Shoppers who know which category their purchase falls into will plan the visit very differently.

What Fits in 48,000 Square Feet

When IKEA U.S. announced the store on April 10, 2026, it listed more than 5,000 products on display. Of those, more than 3,000 curated items, including accessories, lighting and textiles, plus more than 100 small furniture pieces, are planned for immediate takeaway. Larger items such as sofas and beds, along with the rest of the IKEA range, are ordered online or in the store.

So the store is split into three parts:

Part of the store What IKEA has announced How it leaves the building
Takeaway section More than 3,000 curated items, accessories, lighting, textiles and 100+ small furniture pieces In your car, same day
Showroom floor More than 5,000 products on display, set in furnished rooms built around "local living" concepts Ordered for free pickup or paid delivery
As-Is section Gently used products and discontinued items at reduced prices Not specified in IKEA's announcement

Two more pieces round out the floor plan. A central planning area will offer one-on-one consultations for kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and small spaces. A Swedish Deli will serve meatballs, plant balls, falafel balls, veggie dogs and cinnamon buns to eat in or take home.

IKEA says the furnished rooms are "tailored to reflect the unique needs of the Sarasota community." It hasn't said which rooms or which local needs. Those details should become clear when the doors open. Until then, the phrase is all the company has shared.

The Sofa Still Takes a Second Trip

The table shows the practical effect. A trip for a new duvet cover, a floor lamp, picture frames or a side table should end like any other UTC errand, with the bags in your trunk. A trip for a sectional or a bed frame ends with an order number.

From there, the April announcement offers two options: "free pickup or affordable delivery." The Sarasota Herald-Tribune's explainer states it more plainly: pickup is free and delivery comes "with a charge." None of the sources reviewed for this post published a delivery fee for the Sarasota store, so the delivery cost for a large order is still unknown.

The format is deliberate. When IKEA announced the store, interim U.S. CEO Rob Olson tied it to a wider strategy:

"Opening a new store in Sarasota builds on our broader efforts to meet customers where they are, including expanding our footprint in Florida last year through five new Plan and order points with Pick-up at select Best Buy locations across the state."

Those Best Buy points are plan-and-order counters. The UTC store adds a full showroom, a takeaway section, the deli and the planning area around that same model. In the same release, IKEA listed other services it offers, including Click & Collect and TaskRabbit assembly.

For a bigger project, such as a home office, a guest room or a kitchen, the planning consultation may be the most useful part of the store. Each of those rooms used to start with a drive up I-75. Now it can start on Cattlemen Road. If the room needs flat-pack boxes too big for one car, they'll arrive later through pickup or delivery.

Three Opening Targets in Six Months

As of Oct. 5, 2026, IKEA hasn't announced an opening date. The target has moved twice since spring:

  1. April 10, 2026. IKEA's announcement said "late summer 2026."
  2. July 2026. The Herald-Tribune reported that USA TODAY said on July 11 that a winter opening was planned.
  3. Sept. 1, 2026. IKEA told the Bradenton Herald it was aiming for "the fall season," with no specific date announced. The Tampa Bay Times ran the same update on Sept. 4.

The latest word is fall, and that's the target to use. The Bradenton Herald ran photos of the storefront dated Aug. 28, 2026, showing the building in place on Cattlemen Road.

Hiring is also underway. An IKEA job listing for a Retail Sales Responsible Keyholder in Sarasota was posted Sept. 15, 2026. A listing for a Retail Interior Designer & Visual Merchandiser, with two openings, was posted Oct. 1. The visual merchandising role is the one that builds the furnished rooms on the showroom floor. A posting doesn't set an opening date. It does show that staffing for the showroom started in the past three weeks.

No grand opening or soft opening has been announced in the coverage reviewed through Oct. 5.

Cattlemen Road Is Becoming a Furniture Block

IKEA sits between DSW and Golf Galaxy, near REI. It won't be the only home furnishings store on the street.

West Elm is building an 18,000-square-foot store next to L.L. Bean on N. Cattlemen Road. The Bradenton Herald reported in June that it will be the brand's first store in the Manatee-Sarasota area. When Your Observer covered the June announcement of new UTC tenants, it said the store would offer furniture, decor, lighting, textiles and design services, and that both West Elm and IKEA were under construction. UTC's West Elm page, updated Sept. 17, says "Now Hiring" for assistant store managers, a design studio specialist, a shipper-receiver, a visual merchandising associate and seasonal associates. No opening date has been published for West Elm either.

With both stores open, the West District will have two furnishing showrooms at very different price points within a short walk, each with its own design help. One room could be planned at both before anything is ordered.

The block's dining options are growing too. Benderson, which owns UTC, says Hawkers Asian Street Food is "coming soon" to a 5,054-square-foot space along Cattlemen Road. The brand started in Orlando in 2011. Its original location earned a 2022 Michelin Guide Recommendation. Plans for the UTC location include pad Thai, Korean twice-fried chicken wings, Malaysian roti with curry dipping sauce, craft cocktails, sake and the company's first street food sweet shop. "I don't want to give away all the details yet, but let's just say you'll definitely want to save room," CEO and co-founder Kaleb Harrell said. No opening date has been given.

Two smaller openings have already arrived on the University Parkway side. Just Salad opened at 5231 University Parkway, Suite 113, by late August. Pure Green, serving cold-pressed juices, smoothies and açaí bowls, opened at 5275 University Parkway, Suite 130, next to Pure Barre. Your Observer reported it as recently opened in its Sept. 25 Hawkers story.

All of this is happening in a district of more than 4 million square feet near I-75 and University Parkway, on the border of Sarasota and Manatee counties. It already has more than 80 restaurants, over 250 stores and three hotels. Once IKEA and West Elm open, shopping for a room can happen in the same district: plan the room, pick up the small pieces and order the large ones.

Furnishing a room at IKEA's new UTC store is one kind of planning. Deciding what your Lakewood Ranch home is worth before you start that project is another.
